This sedimentary pigment offers an additional health plus, as it is made from a metal-free red. Clean modern pigments such as this will put accidental mud-making in the past. Perylene Red is a moderately intense, semi-opaque, medium red pigment, appearing somewhere between a Cadmium Red and a Cadmium Deep Red hue. It has excellent brightness and tinting strength.
The Rowney Artists perylene maroon is the same pigment, slightly less concentrated. The Rowney perylene red is a darker version of the same pigment, which shifts the hue noticeably toward violet. (Schmincke also offers a single pigment perylene maroon watercolor in the "red" shade, under the marketing label Horadam aquarell deep red.)
